Selty has never fit in with the other unicorns of the Valley, but soon she will be their only hope for survival. Hidden away from the rest of the world by powerful spells, the Valley has long been the unicorns’ refuge from mankind. Now the forests of the Valley are dying off, and no one knows why.

Selty is an orphan and has always longed to be accepted and loved by the other unicorns. But as she reaches adolescence, her coat turns pure white. She’s the only white unicorn in the Valley, and the other unicorns treat her with suspicion and fear. She's especially devastated by the rejection of Arrasin, her closest friend. Her loneliness finally drives her to leave the Valley.

In the world outside, Selty faces the danger of being discovered by humans. But outside, she also discovers the reason why the Valley is dying, knowledge long lost to the rest of the unicorns. She realizes if she doesn't share this knowledge, the Valley could be lost forever. But the knowledge could also drive Arrasin away from her forever.
