A Handful of Scars
Genre: young adult historical
Status: first draft under revision
Sidain is sixteen years old, clever with horses and building miniature aqueducts, and bitter over the death of her father and her family’s ruined reputation. Once high-ranking nobles in a Greek province of the Roman Empire, now she and her mother are nobodies. Sidain has no intention of staying that way.
Being an outcast has one advantage: Sidain sees a horde of Huns preparing to attack before anyone else does. Though she warns the King's fortress of the impending attack, nobody gives her credit for the warning.
Then a Hun's horse is shot down in right in front of her hiding place. The young warrior stays by his dying horse. Sidain has a chance to turn him in, but she helps him escape instead. Which earns her the title of traitor, in addition to outcast, and the brand of a traitor burned into her hand.
When a twist of fate gives Sidain the opportunity to regain her title and status, it comes at a steep cost: this time she's required to betray the young Hun she's falling in love with. Then again, the rest of the Huns are tearing apart the Roman Empire and threatening to invade Greece. How can she trust one of them when so much is at stake?
